• English Language Arts Curriculum Work

In order to establish how SSD will implement the new English Language Arts (ELA) standards, one teacher from every elementary grade level and all secondary teachers who teach ELA were part of a professional development (PD) team. The ELA PD team examined the new ELA standards and developed both horizontally and vertical-aligned curriculum maps. Additionally, the ELA PD team worked to identify if our existing instructional resources (e.g., textbooks) were adequate or if new instructional resources are needed. ELA instructional materials were piloted in K-5 classrooms in the fall of 2015, and 6-8 ELA instructional materials are in the process of being piloted in the spring of 2016.

The School Board held a Worksession on the new ELA Standards on November 4, 2013 and based on teacher committee input adopted the ELA Common Core State Standards.

Additionally, the Math PD team worked with others in school-based teams to identify if our existing instructional resources (e.g., textbooks) are adequate or if new instructional resources are needed.

On October 2, 2012, the Sitka School Board adopted the Common Core State Standards for Math based on the recommendation of the Math PD Team and Sitka's teachers. New instructional materials for Math K-8 were purchased and implemented beginning with the 2014-15 school year.
