  • Student Needs Survey

The Sitka School District is surveying families to identify needs during the school closure. The survey allows families to sign up to receive meals during the closure, and asks about access to technology and school supplies, in case there is an extended closure. All families are encouraged to complete the survey, which can be accessed at

Dear Families and Members of the Sitka School District's Learning Community,

I hope you are all staying safe! Thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we re-tool the way that learning happens for our students. We know that each student's learning situation will be unique during this time of remote learning, which is currently slated for March 30 - May 1. We look forward to the opportunity to partner with families, as we collectively work to provide meaningful learning for our students. Although learning activities will look different in the coming weeks, learning will happen!

Each student and family should have received from teachers and schools specific information about the learning expectations for our time of remote learning. We are fortunate to have such professional educators and staff working in Sitka Schools, as they were able to develop meaningful learning opportunities for all of our students in just the short span of a week, and all while they were learning themselves about what remote learning could look like for our students.

Breakfast and lunch are provided to all youth living in a household with a student who attends Sitka Schools, and sack meals are available for pick-up on Tuesday (3 days of meals) and Friday (4 days of meals) from 8 am - 12 pm just outside the entrance to Sitka High School. Delivery is also available if needed. Students should also have received from schools loaned technology and school supplies that were identified as needed by families. If you find you have a new need, please work with your teacher and school principal. Both ACS and GCI are offering free internet to families during this time of remote learning. Please contact ACS or GCI directly if you would like to take advantage of this offer.

Overall, our remote learning will look like the following plan with specific opportunities shared directly by teachers with their students and families. In all of our planning, we have worked to address both academic and social emotional learning needs of our students. Additionally, our school counselors have put together a letter to support families as they transition to remote learning, and our Learning Support Director Chris Voron has a letter to share with families of a student receiving special education services.

While our school buildings are closed to students, NANA Janitorial has been deep cleaning the schools in preparation for our eventual return. Families who have a question or need that requires a conversation can call the school's phone number, as phones are being monitored in all of our school and district offices.

Despite the change in venue, the Sitka School District continues to be committed to meeting the learning needs of our students to the very best of our ability. We are here to partner with our families and welcome the opportunities provided by remote learning to enhance our collaboration.

The health and safety of our students is of upmost importance. Our youth's actions will make a difference in the safety of our community, and the following poster encourages students to apply our school's values to their daily actions during this time of remote learning. Thank you for your efforts to follow the Governor's Health Mandates and the City's Declarations so we can all stay safe!

    Dr. Mary Wegner, Superintendent
